Book NowLocated about 5.6 kilometers from Singapore, Kusu Island is one of the southern islands of the country. Kusu translates to ‘turtle’ or ‘tortoise’ in Chinese, owing to an old legend. The legend goes that a giant tortoise turned itself into an island to save the lives of two shipwrecked sailors. After being rescued, they returned to thank the tortoise., and built a kramat and shrine in its memory. The tranquil landscape and pristine beaches are incredibly popular among visitors, making it the perfect spot for a picnic.
St John’s Island was formerly used as a quarantine center for people suffering from cholera. By 1930, it was a well known screening center for immigrants and pilgrims who were returning from Mecca. Currently, St John’s island is the perfect getaway from the bustling metropolis, owing to its non commercial setting and rustic vibe. It is another perfect spot for a relaxing swim in its beaches or a picnic. The Sisters Island Marine Park Public Gallery and St John’s Island Trial are worth visiting here. Fishing is also a popular activity on the island.
Lazarus Island is connected to St John’s island through a causeway. Originally used as a prison, Lazarus Island was left abandoned when a prisoner escaped from the island. Fires that broke out in 1902 and 1914 burned away all the vegetation, and the island was left mostly unused. Currently, the C-shaped lagoon is renowned for its white and sandy beach and has been called one of Singapore’s best kept secrets. Picnics with our family and friends and swimming are two activities that are a must-try on the island. Lazarus Island is also home to dozens of stray cats that you can play with.
